Sunnyfields School Days

Nature-based school visits designed to spark curiosity and connection.

Step away from the classroom and explore the world of bees and nature at Sunnyfields. Whether you're part of a school group or a home educating family, our School Days are all about relaxed, hands-on learning in the great outdoors.

Children can peek inside a hive, go on a bee safari through the garden, or get creative with natural materials like beeswax and wildflowers. It’s a gentle, engaging way to learn about pollination, lifecycles, habitats and more—all while surrounded by birdsong and fresh air.

We keep things small, friendly, and flexible so we can shape the session to suit the group; however your children learn best. Below are a few examples of the kinds of visits we can create for your group.

Mini Bee Explorers – Hive Peek & Bee Chat

A gentle, hands-on introduction to honey bees for little nature lovers

For: Children aged 5–14 (with 1 adult per 2 children)
Length: approx. 2 hours
When: Weekdays during term time (May–July)
Cost: £35 per child.
Group size: Minimum 6, Maximum 10 children

Description:
Buzz into the magical world of bees in this friendly and relaxed session where we explore a beehive up close.  We’ll have a chat about honey bees and their bee cousins before popping on a mini beekeepers suit and safely peeking inside a working beehive with an experienced beekeeper. Afterwards, we’ll taste some honeys and talk about how the bees pollinate. A perfect way to learn about pollinators through real-life discovery and hands-on fun.

Includes:

  • Bee suit and guided peek inside a hive (weather permitting)

  • Story or talk about bee life and pollination.

Bee Safari & Build – Nature Explorers Morning

For curious children who love to spot, discover and create!

For: Children aged 5–11 (with 1 adult per 2 children)
Length: 3 hours
When: Weekdays during term time (April–September)
Cost: £25 per child
Group size: Minimum 4, Maximum 8 children

Description:
Start your morning with a wander through our buzzing garden on a bee safari—spotting bumblebees, solitary bees, and other pollinators as they go about their day. With bee ID cards and magnifiers in hand, children will learn how to tell the different species apart and why they matter.

Then it’s time to get creative! We’ll talk about where bees live and how we can help them, before making mini bee hotels or planting flower seeds to take home.

It’s a lovely mix of fresh air, nature knowledge, and hands-on crafting—perfect for little wildlife heroes in the making.

Educational Talks and Workshops Specific to Key Stage 1 and 2

We’re always happy to create tailored visits to the apiary or garden to suit the needs of your learners—whether they’re studying plants and lifecycles in Key Stage 1, or diving into habitats, pollination, and food chains in Key Stage 2.

With plenty of hands-on learning, bee-friendly surroundings, and real-world examples, our nature-based sessions bring the curriculum to life in a way that’s engaging, memorable and full of curiosity.

Can’t come to us? I can come to you.

I also offer in-school visits with talks, interactive displays, and creative bee-themed activities that explore the wonderful world of pollinators. Whether you're after a one-off enrichment session or something to support a topic over time, I’d be delighted to chat about what would work best for your group.  Please note school visits do incur a small fee.

Funding Support for Educational Visits

We understand that budget constraints can make it challenging for schools and home-educating families to access enriching outdoor learning experiences. Fortunately, there are several grants and funding opportunities available that can help cover the costs of visiting Sunnyfields or bringing our bee-themed workshops to your setting.

Educational Visit Grants provide up to £1,200 per trip to support schools with the costs of educational visits, including those focused on environmental education and science. Whilst The Get Out grant supports schools with up to £500 worth of funding for visits. This funding can be instrumental in facilitating trips to places like Sunnyfields, where students can engage in hands-on learning about bees and their habitats.

Support for Home-Educating Families

While government funding for home education is limited, some local authorities may offer grants or financial assistance, particularly for families with children who have special educational needs (SEN). If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), you might be eligible for additional support to access educational resources and experiences.

Various charities and trusts provide grants to support home-educating families. For instance, the Turn2us Grants Search tool is a valuable resource that helps identify potential funding opportunities based on your specific circumstances and location. By entering your postcode and details, you can discover grants that may assist with educational activities, including visits to Sunnyfields.
